Human Geography- 9.5.17

Today in class we learned the background information of a message to Garcia. This story was never intended to go viral. This book was originally published as an inspirational essay in 1899. Due to it’s popularity it was made into a pamphlet, a book, and later on, a movie! In addition, over 40 million copies were sold, and it was translated into 37 different languages! This story took place during the Spanish-American War. Garcia was appreciated in Cuba because he sought for Cuban independence from Spain. During this time Mckinley was the president. Unfortunately he was assassinated by an anarchist. The unusual vocabulary adds dynamics to the story, in order to intrigue the reader. One interesting word we learned was slipshod. This word means careless, and idiotic. The helpful theme in this books is to take initiative. This is when you do the right thing without being told. A word that describes this story is the ancient greek word: arete’. This means the act of living up to one’s full potential. In the end, we had a great day of class.
